About the artist
(again)

Still me, just more specific.

Once again, my name is J. Riley Henderson.

I'm a singer-songwriter from multiple influences, ranging from Appalachian folk to gospel. I was raised by musicians, and grew up with the sounds of Paul Simon, The Eagles, Randy Travis, and the Baptist hymnal, to name a few.

In addition to growing up around musicians I was also raised in church, and the power of storytelling has never been lost on me. Not old fables or overdrawn sermons, but watching a community of people in constant confession of their states of mind and character really impressed upon me the importance of remaining honest. The undeniable power of bald-faced, open-handed declarations, no matter how they look, sound, or feel. As such I believe that universality is found in specificity. In all of us, there is something that applies to everyone. It's how we stay around.

People have described my music as "revelatory", "challenging", and "uncomfortably good", with "rich vocals and compelling storytelling". I hope that this is fair.

I hope this helps.

Songs about nothing

'Songs About Nothing,' is my debut album, released in January 2024. It's a diary of in-betweens. Feelings between feelings. Small landmarks. If you like watching young men stammer after being asked to explain themselves, you should listen to this.

bag

'bag' is my debut single. I wrote it at some ungodly hours on a couch I didn't own, about a condition that troubled me greatly. I had my doubts about recording it at all until a friend of my brother said that it helped. So, I hope it helps.
